Nothing brightens someone day quite like an unexpected compliment. A simple “Nice outfit,” or “Love your hair,” can be the difference between a good and bad day. We as girls often can be very hard on ourselves and have trouble admitting when we excel at something. We are constantly comparing ourselves to others instead of being content. Yet why is it so hard to encourage others? Why do we struggle to lift others up when that is something we are desperately desire?
Hebrews 3 verse 5 says, ” But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. “
” And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. And not giving up, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other all the more as we see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25
In today’s society, we are taught to look out for ourselves first, and that complimenting someone else on their strengths is a sign of our weakness. That is such a lie. It takes absolutely nothing from us to tell someone that they excelled in this area or that we are proud of them for what they have accomplished. With so many girls being insecure in this day and age, it has never been more important for us to encourage each other. We are after all, not to quote High School Musical, are all in this together. You never know, one simple compliment could help save someone’s life.
Now I’ve always been one to try to practice what I preach. So this year I have really focused more on trying to encourage others. I actually tried to compliment five people every day. I’m sure you’re thinking only five people? What a piece of cake! It was actually a lot harder then it sounds. It was so easy for me to get distracted or forget how many people I had complimented on a given day. But after awhile, it became easier for me to compliment people without thinking about it. Think of the impact it can have on Non-Christians. Since God can’t speak to us directly using words, we are His instruments to reach out to others. You might be used to bless someone with a gift God wants them to become aware they possess.
As girls, we all have those days where nothing seems to go right. Our hair looks like we didn’t brush it, we forgot to do our homework, we’re fighting with friends, and when we look in the mirror to only want to punch it. On days like that we really need encouragement. Everyday can be a bad day for any array of girls. We all know far too well what it feels like to be beaten down and forgotten, let’s instead remind each other what it means to feel empowered and uplifted.
I found this quote online that truly sums of this article,
” You need to be aware of what everyone is doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits. When we all help each other, everyone wins.”
So I want to end with a question. Have you encouraged your 5 people today?
